Idaho HB 557 Update:

House Bill 557 would ban cities and counties in Idaho from having or enforcing their own anti-discrimination ordinances that go beyond what state law currently allows — including protections for sexual orientation and gender identity. Because Idaho’s state anti-discrimination law does not include sexual orientation or gender identity, this bill would effectively invalidate local LGBTQ-inclusive protections in at least a dozen cities and counties that have adopted them. The Idaho House of Representatives passed the bill with a strong majority and it has now been sent to the Senate State Affairs Committee for consideration. If the Senate approves it and the governor signs it, it would become law.

HB 557 would strip away already-established safeguards that help protect LGBTQ+ residents from discrimination in housing, employment, and public services. Without these local protections, LGBTQ+ people in many communities would have no meaningful legal recourse if they are fired from a job, denied housing, or excluded from services because of who they are. These gaps can contribute to real harm and insecurity for LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

How to Act:

  • Contact your state legislators (especially Senate members on the State Affairs Committee) to express your concerns and urge them to vote no on the bill.

  • Engage with local LGBTQ+ advocacy organizations to stay informed about grassroots campaigns and coordinated actions.

  • Participate in public hearings or community forums on the bill to share your perspective.

  • Support or volunteer with civil rights groups working on legislative advocacy and legal protections.
